Around the ACC Mid-Week

DESTINATION BOSTON: Boston College is off to a good start in the ACC and with Florida State coming to town, ESPN has taken notice. ESPN's Game Day will be in Chestnut Hill for its first visit to the campus. The matchup between Boston College and Florida State is one of the two marquee games in the conference that matches ranked teams. The Eagles have been hot against ranked teams with three straight wins. Saturday's game will be Boston College's first as a member of the ACC.

PICKING UP MOMENTUM: With the exception of Duke and Wake Forest, which have yet to win a game this season, the ACC is off to a good start against teams from other leagues. The ACC is 7-3 so far against non-conference competition. That good start has seven ranked in the Top-25. And the computers that spit out the Sagarin Rankings have 10 ACC teams among the top 50.

ON THE RUN: Georigia Tech running back P.J. Daniels has put together a string of three straight 100-yard games. He posted 103 against North Carolina in his last game and had a carry for 42 yards that helped him reach that plateau. Clemson's Reggie Merriweather has rushed for 13 touchdowns in his last eight games.

SPREADING IT AROUND: Florida State quarterback Drew Weatherford hit 11 different receivers as he threw for 342 yards and two touchdowns against The Citadel. It was only the second start for Weatherford, who came back strong after completing only seven passes in his first game against Miami. Facing the Hurricanes is tough, especially in a first game, but Weatherford was able to bounce back. Weatherford had three receivers that went over the 100-yard mark, including Chris Davis (9-125), De'Cody Fagg (7-113) and Greg Carr (3-104).

CATCHING THEM IN BUNCHES: When North Carolina wide receiver  Jarwarski Pollack catches one pass in a game, it is a pretty good bet that he's going to catch two more. In 26 of his 36 career games, Pollack has hauled in at least three passes and he did it against Georgia Tech in his last game. Pollack is closing in on two North Carolina records for career catches and career yards. He needs 15 catches and 766 yards to become UNC's all-time leading receiver.

HOT CONTEST: Maryland and West Virginia have been evenly matched over the years and the series record, which stands at 20-20-2, bears it out. They also have identical records at home, which is 11-9-1. Saturday's game is at Maryland's Byrd Stadium and the Terrapins have won three straight at home in the series.

DON'T EXPECT A SHUT OUT THIS TIME: In five of the seven games played between Duke and VMI, there has been a shutout. But it has been 65 years since the two teams last played and football has changed greatly. Duke, after being shut out in the first game between the teams, came back and won four of the next six with shutouts of its own. VMI has lost 12 of its last 13 games so this may be Duke's best chance for a win this season.

HOME AT LAST: Virginia Tech finally has a home game after opening with two straight on the road. The Hokies host Ohio, a surprise winner over Pittsburgh last week. Virginia Tech has nine straight wins in home openers and is 16-2 under head coach Frank Beamer.

RARE VISIT: Miami will be making its first visit to Death Valley to take on Clemson on Saturday. The teams have played six previous times and it marks the third time that both teams enter ranked in the polls.

NEED TO BOUNCE BACK: N.C. State has only four wins in 15 games since 1953 after losing its season opener. The Wolfpack host winless Eastern Kentucky on Saturday and it is the first game between the two schools. Head coach Chuck Amato has posted a 19-3 mark against non-conference opponents.

BUDDING RIVALS: Wake Forest and East Carolina will play for the fifth straight year on Saturday. The Demon Deacons have won four straight but they all have been close one with each of them being settled by 10 or fewer points.

OFF AND RUNNING: North Carolina will face one of the toughest running teams when Wisconsin visits Kenan Stadium on Saturday. The Badgers have averaged 325 yards rushing in its first two games, which ranks fourth nationally. The Tar Heels gave up 122 yards on the ground against Georgia Tech in its first game of the season.

QUICK HITS: Georgia Tech has recorded seven interceptions this season and is tied with UAB for the lead nationally. … N.C. State's defense has been stingy with the yardage having not allowed its last five opponents to crack 300 yards in total offense. … Duke's Mike Schneider needs 100 yards passing to become the 11th quarterback at the school to reach 3,000 yards passing. … Miami tight end Greg Olsen leads the ACC in receiving yards per game (137.0) and that ranks sixth nationally. Not bad for a tight end. … Virginia Tech has scored in a school-record 124 games. … Wake Forest freshman kicker Sam Swank hit a career-long 51-yard field goal to score the Demon Deacons' only points against Nebraska. … Maryland linebacker D'Qwell Jackson has been laying the lumber so far. He's second in the nation in tackling with 34 through two games.
