"Jackets Make A Splash In AP Poll"

by Joe Johnson
Sep 7, 2005

It has been a while since Georgia Tech has been ranked in the AP poll. Make it four years. Saturday's 23-14 win over Auburn was enough to vault the Yellow Jackets in at No. 17 and to push the Tigers out.

But after one game, Georgia Tech coach Chan Gailey and a handful of players aren't too impressed. The Yellow Jackets know they can't afford to slip up in their second game against North Carolina on Saturday. There is a little pesky stat that might be on Gailey's mind. His teams have five wins over ranked teams in his three years but following them up with another one has not been easy. Only once in the previous four chances has Georgia Tech followed up their win over a ranked team with another one. A year ago the Tar Heels beat Georgia Tech 34-13 one week after the Yellow Jackets upset No. 18 Clemson.

Turning that trend around is a priority for Georgia Tech this season. At least the Yellow Jackets have their second game of the season at home against North Carolina, which will be playing its first game of the season.
