Clemson Pre-Game Notes

by Joe Johnson
Sep 30, 2005

Saturday's opponent is as good as any for the Tigers to break their two-game funk. Clemson has beaten Wake Forest 54 times, which is the second-highest win total against any team the Tigers have ever played. Only South Carolina, with 62 losses, has been Clemson's flunky more times. Wake Forest is the first unranked opponent for the Tigers after three straight to open the season. This season when the Tigers have made it to the red zone, they have been perfect. At 14-of-14 (six touchdowns, eight field goals), Clemson is the only team in the ACC that has not missed a scoring opportunity.

Close games may be wearing on Clemson a little bit. With eight of the last nine and 10 of the last 15 games being decided by seven or few points, that means every down counts, especially in the fourth quarter. The last easy win for Clemson was a 29-7 win over South Carolina. The run of close games began with last season's double-overtime win against Wake Forest in the first game.
